Beyond Borders.
Calligraphy Reconnects.

Calligrapher Hiromitsu Ishibi has long felt the need for a space where calligraphy can freely meet, engage in dialogue, and expand beyond schools, styles, and positions.

In April 2025, through a live performance and exhibition held in New York, this vision was shared with J-Collabo and evolved into a concrete plan: to create a place in Brooklyn that opens new paths for calligraphic exchange beyond Japan.

Based in Brooklyn, J-Collabo has spent many years connecting Japanese culture with contemporary expression. Deeply resonating with this vision, J-Collabo welcomed Ishibi as Senior Advisory Artist and founded the Brooklyn Calligraphy Association as a place where calligraphy can meet and resonate across schools, nations, and backgrounds.

Calligraphy is not merely the shaping of characters. It is an act that reflects the spirit of the writer and the time in which it is created.
From Brooklyn—a city where diverse values intersect—we seek to reconnect calligraphy with the world as a living cultural practice.

The Brooklyn Calligraphy Association is seeking members who wish to help create a new space for exchange in calligraphy — across schools, borders, and disciplines.

  • Those eager to learn calligraphy as a form of artistic expression

  • Those seeking to challenge boundaries between genres and disciplines

  • Those exploring new possibilities for calligraphy

Eligibility:

  • Calligraphers and shodo artists

  • Artists working with calligraphy as a form of expression

  • Those interested in cultural exchange through calligraphy

* No restrictions on school, age, nationality, or career background.
